On Wednesday, we filmed the final part of our opening sequence which was a training after they the two main characters had been to the press conference.
We had originally planned to film the two characters walking in to the boxing gym from the outside, but due to poor light conditions this was not possible so we dicided to film that part another day when the light is better. Therfore we had to be careful to keep the windows out off frame so as not to ruin the continuety of the film.
The rest of the filming went to plan and we have obtained some good footage for editing and we would like to thank the people at the "Mu-sa" martial arts gym for letting us film there and we hope it didn't cause too much disruption

comments on filming - 19-03-2010 - By James Allen
today we filmed the press conference for our opening sequence for our film. it took us around an hour to film the whole press conference as we shot each section of the press conference from a variety of angles and places. we made a few bloopers during filming but on the whole I think was a positive filming session, we plan to next go out filming on the 24-03-2010 to film our training sequence part of our opening for the film.

Distribution Analysis by Alexander Martin
Distribution of a film can take a number of different forms depending on the company that developed the film and the crew’s contacts within the industry. If it was a small independent company financing an up and coming director then they would have to use an independent distributor and even then they would have to attract one which could prove difficult due to the uncertainty of the film however, they will still be able to distribute it themselves through below-the-line advertise through: Word of mouth, viral marketing, flyers or public announcement, mostly free forms of advertising.
ndependent distributors would be their best course of action since they would be able to work closely with them to get the results they wanted plus they would have experience in that field and be able to advise effectively, however it does create the problem of splitting the responsibilities and credits an unfortunate necessity.
Whereas if the company was very corporate and financially secure then they would most likely own their own distribution branch and use them to save on cost which could then be spent on advertising through trailers, posters, billboards or TV . Radio broadcasts.
Festivals are the only other alternative where an independent film can be shown to a number of spectators who will rate it, some of them will be agents looking to purchase the distribution rights to a film so they can tie their name to its success or failure.
In my opinion the best option would be to do option 1 of acquiring a separate independent distributor to organise, advise and perform the method of marketing and distributing the film.
There are a large number of independent film distributors but the one most likely to achieve our goals would be either: Channel 4, Film 4, Optimum Releases or Arrow Films sine they have experience in marketing low budget boxing films such as Champions Forever.

Title Sequences by Alexander Martin
The title sequence of a film is in itself an art form and can be just as effective and important as any other aspect of the film especially since it will be the first thing a viewer will see when viewing it or whether it will be purchased after distribution.
The examples we have been using are the boxing films of Fighting and Ali both of which we feel not only used the conventional methods in order to create an effective but also compelling film but they also used very similar title sequences to display their names which simply consist of the title made clear and colourful and mounted on a darker background so as to emphasise and make it more readable.
We decided to follow a similar route by making out title sequence also appear on a dark background but decided to make it more recognisable by using 2 colours to complement each other and a font that would be easily recognisable.
Here is an example of the titles which resembles the title shot of Ali, we decided to stick closely to convention by not making it too over extravagant but also to challenge it slightly so that it stands out more and will also be remembered more clearly when compared to others.
However we also wished to display our company logo so as to give credit to our efforts whereas some usually only display it as a flash title we decided on giving it a full graphic display similar to those used in 20th Century Fox

Locations by Alexander Martin
Corridor
This location was decided upon because of its easy access, close to where the next scene will be filmed and good for what we want to do.
The main character will burst through the double doors and run down the corridor shown above with the camera changing from him running towards it to running away from it etc.
When he gets to the corner he will skid round in a hurry and continue running down, again appearing to run towards and away from the camera.
Conference
Here is where the conference will be filmed because of its wide open space, access to adjustable lights and area above and on ground level for different filming angles.
The audience will be set in the middle of the room and a desk placed just in front of the black curtains closest the door for quick access.
There will be 2 rows of 5 spectators with the ones speaking at the front and those not at the back.
Camera will film mostly on the ground level but and high shot will be done from the stairs on the balcony

comments on today's filmin- Ian Uttley 18-03-10
today we met up at the honeywell site to discuss what order to film the shots
We spent around 2 hours rehearsing the shots because the actor had to go for a lesson and we marked down the position of each shot.
In the afternoon we spent 1 hour and a half collecting footage for the first scene of our two minute opening. Unfortunatly the camera we had loaned for that day was faulty and did not record to footage on the tape we were using.
Our plan of action is to use a different camera and tape for the next time we film which will be tommorow when we film the press conference. Also before we film we will double chack for faults before and after filming

Prop List by Alexander Martin
Props List
Here is a detailed list of all the equipment and props used throughout filming accompanied with information on when and where it was used and why it was used in that scene.
Standard Digital Camera & Tripod
Here is an example of the camera used, it is a standard digital camera with tripod issued to every group for the purpose of filming and can perform all the actions from recording to taking pictures.
We had some minor problems with our camera since the first one malfunctioned and most of the footage lost, however the scene was easily re-filmable and came out well.
HD Digital Camera & Tripod
This is a High Definition Digital Camera and tripod normally reserved for the people in A2 but because of the circumstances with our group’s standard camera we were forced to use this to re-shoot the conference scene since the previous one lost all the footage and there were no spare cameras that could be taken out.
The scene was shot well despite the slight quality difference in our film now due to different cameras being used, however the camera performed well and had improved not only the quality but the sound and movement as well.
Microphones, Cables and Stands
For the conference scene the hall we used had to be made to look authentic and so the group reserved and used these microphones and in every boxing conference there are always microphones so the audience can hear the athletes.
We used both a standard recording microphone and microphone stands so that the characters wouldn’t have to hold them while speaking and put the cables under the table and plugged them in. The microphones were never turned on since it wasn’t necessary and it was expected they would affect the sound of the product.
Gloves and Punch Bag
Here are examples of the boxing memorabilia used in our production when filming the gym training sequence. Mike is shot taking boxing gloves out of his bag, putting them on and starting to hit the punching bag.
The gloves were an Everlast brand since it was the most common used in both the films analysed and the punch bag was a home made bag created by the gyms owner.
There were other miscellaneous props used such as chairs and desks but since these were every day items we felt it wasn’t necessary to include them in a props list.

Alexander Martin performed many roles throughout the projects completion first starting out as the primary researcher but as time went on and a majority of the group were taken with illnesses had to sep up to cover their responsibilities.
He managed to find all the locations used in the production very early in the development and acted as the main organiser for filming times / dates. During this time he also researched a number of boxing films: Rocky franchise, Ali, Raging Bull, Fighting and even non-boxing films such as Serpico, 8 Mile and Lock Stock so as to get ideas for filming ideas and how to set certain moods.
After initial filming was completed where he acted in most of the scenes he also helped edit the 1st and 2nd scenes in the corridor and the conference room. After that due to the original photographers recent series of illnesses he was to take up the role as photographer and return to all the locations and take the location, props and character photographs.

Writer
Ian’s previous camera experiences proved to be very useful throughout the projects filming since he already new most of the best positions to film from to get a desired effect.
He was responsible for gathering the equipment and deciding on the best course of action in the filming process with some help and criticisms given by rest of group, he also wrote the shot list and script to be presented on the blog and helped edit the 1st and 3rd scenes so that we were with the time limit for the production but also so that it still look continuous and fluid.
Planning also fell under his responsibilities by collaborating with Alexander Martin to create and effective and mostly followed call sheet and after much deliberation, since he was supposed to be the original actor for Coach Howard, he’s the one who wrote the character profile and attached the photograph.

Questionnaire
James Allen was the first actor to be decided upon for this film not just because of him volunteering but by being one of the better built crew member for the role of a professional boxer.
Despite occasional disruption in the filming he proved to be a valuable actor who was able to follow instructions and even give instructions well as to how his character should act being Barnsley born which helped decide our stories location setting.
He was responsible for gathering information regarding the public’s opinion to boxing films and how they would view a film with our type of setting, this was to be accompanied by a series of graphs and charts to emphasise the results and make them easy to follow. James reviewed the more modern and up to date adaptations of the boxing genre and reviewed them by linking them with our main project so as to compare and contrast the points.
Editing was performed well with James helping to edit the 1st corridor scene and the final gym scene where he played to centre role for most of it, and his ability to choose, break down and reassemble sound proved invaluable since he was the main person in charge to finding and editing sound into the project. The original draft of the script was written by both James and Luke Green to be worked on later by Ian Uttley.
Luke Green

Original Photographer
Luke Green was unfortunately ill for most of the projects developments due to stomach issues but his work still proved to be incredibly informative and useful throughout.
Photography was to be his main responsibility since he had a lot of experience using the more advanced cameras as opposed to the standard digital models, however was unable to attend most of the filming times due to health problems and so he was put in charge of editing the sound effects and helping with the editing for the 1st and 3rd scenes.
Acting as the antagonist was his volunteered role as he wished to play the “bad guy” and was very thorough in his research of Russian characters and how they would stereotypically behave in an athletic competition, taking a lot of inspiration from both Rocky III and Fighting Spirit.
His part in the editing was devoted to the title sequence where he was to research and analyse different title sequences both for boxing films and those which bare a similar story.
He also helped Alexander develop the treatments so that they could be broken down into simpler and easier to read formats so that potential viewers and distributors wouldn’t be put off by the amount of writing involved.
